Dear Daimler-Chrysler

Dear Daimler-Chrysler:

Your Dodge automotive line has captivated me since my very first day of driver's education. I was assigned to a white Dodge Spirit that I immediately loved, despite being raised the daughter of a GM employee.  The first car I bought from a dealership was a black Dodge Stratus, and I am currently the proud owner of a 2002 Dodge Stratus SE.

With much love for and an established history with your product, I write to you today to express my disappointment over the fact that you did not issue a recall on the Stratus' rear strut mounts, both of which I have had to replace this year.  I was horrified at the condition of the stock parts - both severely corroded to the point that they crumbled as they were removed.

Strut mount Even more frightening was the affirmation of poor quaility that I received from the Dodge service departments when I called around to price parts.  Again and again I was told that Dodge Stratus owners have problems with the rear strut mounts, and everyone I spoke with shared the same sentiment - it's a wonder that Dodge didn't recall them.

So, Daimler-Chrylser, though I have replaced the rear strut mounts in my Stratus (myself!), I write to encourage you to revisit the design and take action to correct this common problem. This Dodge enthusiast wants to continue to believe in your product!

Sincerely,

Sara J. Thomas

Puppy In The Stroller

Note: my son came up with the title of today's post.

Grand Ledge, MI held its annual Color Cruise & Island Festival this weekend. Eager for a road trip, my son & I made the trip and took our turn down the Grand River on the Princess Laura riverboat.

The Ledges have played an important role in my life. I find peace there; my restless spirit is quieted the moment I see the Big Rocks. I could (and have) spent hours wandering through them, climbing waterfalls and drinking from the natural springs. The majestic beauty of the place never fails to bring a smile to my face and happiness to my soul.

Yesterday was no exception. We explored the vendor booths set up in Island Park, sampled fresh-pressed apple cider and warm kettle-korn, cooed over two adorable 7-month-old puppiesLlama  that some girls were carrying around, made a ring from a horseshoe nail, and even pet a llama (whose picture still makes me laugh!).

Despite the great fun to be had at the festival, we had to leave early to visit some family. We fell in behind a large family with a stroller, enjoying the general din that the kids were creating.  I wasn't really listening to what they were saying until the oldest boy suddenly screeched, "YOU BOUGHT THE PUPPY!" Pandemonium broke out, and the child continued, "IT'S IN THE STROLLER, LOOK!  THE PUPPY IS IN THE STROLLER!"  Sure enough, there was the tiny black and white puppy we'd seen earlier in the park, hidden underneath a cozy fleece blanket in the stroller basket.  As the pandemonium commenced, I turned to the mom and congratulated her on being the best mom ever!  She smile broadly and told me that they had been considering a puppy for awhile, and the kids had all wondered why they had to leave the festival so soon after arriving.  Her excuse was, "We've spent enough money already... don't worry, I promise you'll be happy with what we got," and indeed they were. I will never forget the look of sheer joy on the children's faces.  Shawn & I were both thankful that we were a part of the celebration!

We had planned to see my brother in the afternoon to give him birthday hugs, but some sad circumstances involving his mother-in-law prevented our visit.  Thoughts and prayers go out to his extended family in this sad and difficult time...

So we traveled a little further to see my parents, who were very happy to receive us! My dad and Shawn talked guy stuff and shot pellet guns while my mom helped me out with homeopathic remedies for my hip pain. We went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Mason, had Nutter Butter cookies and coffee for dessert and watched my parents' crazy dog Maggie show off her latest tricks. She's quite the stinker, that one - my parents have their hands full!

The hour grew late and it was time to say goodbye, but the day is imprinted in our memories as one of the best we've had in a while!

I Can Run

Run like hell and get the agony over with. - Clarence DeMar

I've taken up running again, and with that comes the familiar pain that starts in my lower back and wraps around my hips into the front of my legs.  It's worse on the left this time. My chiropractor feels that my SI joints are causing the discomfort.

The Sacroiliac Joint allows torsional or twisting movements when we move our legs [source:Sacroiliac_inflamed
http://sportsinjuryclinic.net].  They can get locked up or become too mobile when subjected to impact, or due to a change or increase in physical activities. Pain can also be caused by hormonal/weight changes or inflammatory joint disease.  Left unchecked, SI pain can spread to the ligaments and nerves which surround them.

After conducting some research, I believe that the cause of my pain is mainly biomechanical, directly related to my cardio routine. However, I suspect it may also have something to do with leg length discrepancy caused by a spinal misalignment.  Whatever the cause(s), I'm overdue to see my chiropractor.

In the meantime, I'll take a day off from running and look into back support devices that may help to ease the discomfort.

After all, "Running won't kill you; you'll pass out first!" - Unknown

Anti-Bacterial

I took the cover off for the picture

 a conversation with my son

Me:  Hey, I've been meaning to talk to you about the toothbrush you keep [in a travel case] in the shower.

Shawn: Yeah?

Me: Well, it's not drying out. When it stays wet all the time, it harbors bacteria. That's gross.

Shawn: That's why I wash it with that orange [anti-bacterial] soap before I brush my teeth! It kills the bacteria, Mom.

Me: ...

Let's Call It What It Is

Heartache.  In the crux of it, I find myself doing strange things.

  • Like dishes.  A lot of dishes.  All the time, dishes.
  • And wiping surfaces to free them from dirt.  The counters, the table, the wall, the floor.
  • Writing Post-Its to myself.
  • Crying. Staring blankly out the window. Not eating the Dove candy bar that Brian bought for me, but scarfing the chocolate chip cookie that Harry gave me before I even realized I was eating it.
  • Losing weight. (Already? It's only been two days!  But yes, 2 days, 2 pounds)
  • Reorganizing household items, feeling guilty about it, then feeling proud of it, then guilty again.
  • Blogging.  Daily. (2 days, I know)
  • Having no idea and no plan for what happens next and definitely not enjoying that concept. Wait, no... that's a normal thing.
  • Wishing people wouldn't look at me that way.

Well, whatever.  Everyone goes through it, right?  I'm sleeping with my winter hat on tonight.
